Dear Students, Parents, and Guardians,

It is a pleasure to be teaching computer science and robotics here at Simi Valley High School. This is my second year here, and already I am seeing our technology programs growing. My classes are full to capacity, with many students returning for upper-level classes!

It may be an unusual progression, but as I moved from professional writer to programmer to teacher, I discovered a common thread that runs through all these careers. What I find most rewarding, at work and in life, is learning new skills and then empowering others to do the same. In advertising, I supervised and mentored creative department interns (copywriters and art directors). As a Web developer, I hosted and trained interns from as far away as Nepal and China. As a full-time educator, I've taught computer science, robotics, Web design, video production, and English-language arts. I love to see what students create when they are given the time, tools and skills!

My teaching credentials include a single-subject credential for English and a Career Technical Education (CTE) credential for both Information Technology and Arts, Media & Entertainment. I also hold a Masters of Arts in Education degree from Pepperdine University Graduate School of Education and Psychology.

No matter what I am teaching, I have found that technology makes lessons more engaging for students. Equally important, technology can quickly and accurately capture data about both knowledge and skills, so that the students, parents/guardians and I have an accurate and timely picture of each student's abilities and needs.

For Periods 1 through 5, class notes and assignments are posted daily on Google Classroom. If you are a parent or guardian, you can request to be added as a "Google Guardian" to receive updates on your student's progress. I encourage both parents and students to log onto the Aeries system weekly to check on attendance and grades. I am available for parent conferences during Period 6 or after school by appointment.

Students are welcome to stop by Room D-1 with questions or to make up missing work during lunch or after school, Monday through Thursday. It helps to check with me ahead of time in case I have to step out for a meeting or a quick errand.

I look forward to working with you as the year progresses. Please don't hesitate to send me an email if you have any questions.

Sincerely,

Mrs. Lisa Giacalone
