AP Studio Art

A Message from Mr. Derian...

           Based on the goals delineated at the College Board website at www.collegeboard.org, AP Studio Art students are asked to improve their skills as researchers, experimenters, and college-level artists. The AP Studio Art Program consists of three different courses of studies. AP students will work towards submitting a portfolio exam for one. The three courses of study are 2-D Design, Drawing, and 3-D Design. The submitted portfolio, if qualified, can earn the student college credit and/or advanced placement in college.

            In the spring, students will upload digital images of artwork and commentary online. If a portfolio is submitted for Drawing or 2-D Design, actual artworks will be sent in. Each portfolio has three sections: Selected Works (which show quality), Sustained Investigation (Concentration), and a Range of Approaches (or Breadth).

            I look forward to assisting each AP student in achieving their dreams as successful artists and members of our community.

About the course...

The AP Studio Art portfolios are designed for students who are seriously interested in the practical experience of art. AP Studio Art is not based on a written exam; instead, students submit portfolios for evaluation at the end of the school year. The AP Studio Art Program consists of three portfolios — 2-D Design, 3-D Design and Drawing — corresponding to the most common college foundation courses.

2-D Design
In this course, students will create a three-part portfolio that demonstrates a fundamental competence and range of understanding of two dimensional visual methods, applications and concepts. Students create two dimensional art in one or more of the following areas; traditional design studies, graphic arts, photography, computer imaging.

3-D Design
Students in this course will submit a three-part portfolio that requires demonstration of fundamental competence and range of understanding of three-dimensional visual methods, applications and concepts. Students will demonstrate their understanding of the art elements and design principles as they relate to sculptural forms. Work may include figurative or nonfigurative sculpture, architectural models, ceramics, fiber arts, and found object assemblage.

Drawing
This course guides students to refine their drawing and painting skills, to fulfill specific drawing assignments, and to develop a body of artwork they find to be an interesting artistic pursuit.  The course will be designed to meet the requirements to complete a portfolio established by the College Board.  The student will create a three-part portfolio that shows an understanding and exploration of a broad range of drawing issues.  Students work from observation and imagination to master multiple drawing issues.
